Not wishing to be considered a naysayer I’ll just repeat what someone who knows has to say. 009s are fine for engines that only run at idle and full throttle, any other condition requires some load sensing (vac advance). With a SVDA I guarantee you a gain of 3-4mpg, a 15 degree drop in oil temps, a 50 degree drop in head temps (all on the highway), and better throttle response, compared to a 009 equipped engine. The 009s will require richer jetting to not fall flat on its face pulling away from a light. The SVDA really is one of the best upgrades you can make. The 009 is a complete piece of junk. Nope .never have ..genuine Bosch with pert on one , other one is crank fired and I have to wait till next sat to find out what the EC 1800 is running on the fourteen
My research and experience is not exhaustive, but my conclusion on 009’s is they work in the right (and are the best option) application and if tuned correctly. Performance (IDA/IDF) carbs are problematic to get ported (vs manifold) vac. Adding to this is the need to get a vac signal from each throttle, and even then you can still get pulsing so need to add a vac can. That’s a lot of extra plumbing which can develop leaks down the line, or just go 009 BUT get the carbs jetted correctly to overcome the flatspot.in other words, if you’re running IDF’s 009 is probably the simplest and best option considering you were gonna need to get them tuned anyway, so might as well get them tuned for 009. Add to this my take on folks running DCOE’s (me included) on water cooled vw’s don’t have a vac advance option, then again I come to the conclusion 009 (or non vacadvance) is perfectly ok for the right carb application and if jetted correctly. If you’re running stock-ish single carbs the rationale for 009 is weaker, as you’ll have more accessible ported vac, and less concerns over pulsing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
But your research and experience ignores that fact that for an engine to run efficiently the ignition timing needs to alter with load. Yes you can make the engine work with a 009 but it will only work efficiently at WOT or idle – that’s why 009s are used in racing applications or industrial engines with fixed speed/load. Weber IDFs have ported vacuum and I ‘tee’ two vacuum hoses to a vapour trap but the distributor will work sensing load from only one cylinder, albeit with some pulsing as you mention. Running IDF’s with a 009 might be the simplest but it certainly isn’t the best option.
