I've said that............ if the oil bath has been connected to the manifold will it not be sucking a little bit of oil out of the thing...........
If the connection's driving the actuator for the hot air feed, no. Unless he's stuck the hose in the wrong place.
it reads to me that he has un blocked the servo connection on the manifold( you can see a yellow pipe in the back ground ) and connected that to the oil bath/air filter box. I have not worked on the earlier oil bath filters.
To my knowledge, there's two types of inlet manifold for a type 1 - one has the pipe out the side for a servo and one has a pipe out the side for the air cleaner. When @Flakey kindly offered me an inlet manifold, I didn't notice that it was the one with the wider servo pipe. (To be honest, I didn't know there was different types). No problem, just adapt it... only it turned out to have been welded up anyway, ie no hole at all. So the wide pipe was removed, the hole re-drilled, and a barbed adaptor stuck through so that I can have a pipe from the top of the manifold below the carb to my air cleaner - as before on the old manifold.
on my engine I have the later air box. the yellow pipe coming out of the side of the manifold on mine is blocked off. instead I have it connected to the carb where yours is blocked middle rear as you look at it. all I thought is if its sucking oil and the seeping out of the connector onto the manifold...... I thought all engines had the connector for the servo in the same place, that's when they fitted servos
I think in fairness to Alex, the four hours was including the adaption of the manifold. It's just not as 'good' as it was after the engine was out and everything cleaned and fluffed and fettled. It's not starting so well again after finally seeming to get that sorted, and less responsive in general. When I decided to have a quick shufty in the engine bay to see if there was anything obvious, I spotted what looked like a crack and leakage and put 2 and 2 together... apparently making 5.
Mines a '74 RHD, which I'm guessing pre-dates servos? It's certainly how it was connected up when I got it. I did go and have a quick check when you suggested oil coming back from the oil bath to the new fitting below the carb, but it's all nice and clean. To be honest, if it's not cracked and I was panicking unnecessarily (stupid woman, sorry ) then I'll just look for other reasons that performance has dipped since the manifold was replaced. I'm assuming that the carb gasket was replaced, and I'm assuming timing was checked and carb adjusted as necessary.... but I guess I'll ask rather than assume, just in case. Apologies also to @Flakey, I really didn't mean to imply that you'd sold me something unfit for purpose, I know you wouldn't do that (it's why I didn't say where it had come from in my original post) ... and it seems I was wrong to diagnose a crack anyhow, which is a massive relief.
It's easy enough to check for an air leak on the manifold you have fitted. With the engine running at tick over, squirt a little Bradex easy start in the area you are concerned about. If the engine picks up - it's drawing air. If not happy days - your manifold is good and the problem lies elsewhere but at least you have ruled something out. Stirlingmoz
That looks about right. the pipe/ hole that's marked is blocked off sometimes with a bit of pipe and a screw it's a one size fits all carb so it has more holes than needed.
I don't think your stupid, women or not. we all have a different view on things and that's how to help each other.
The one on my bug fell out all the time until I lost it at 3 in the morning zipped tied an old 5p coin with bubble gum on the back got me home just
Ok, you have a “crack” in your alloy casting, the cheat when determining whether or not it has gone right through is to smear fairy liquid around it. If it is cracked, when warm the fairy liquid will bubble. If no bubbles, no cracks have gone through the casting wall
New manifold gaskets should also be fitted when replacing the manifold as they get squashed, they could be sucking air maybe?
They were definitely listed on the invoice, but I’ll check. Those Rubber boot things were deemed to be in good condition and not replaced. Carb gasket wasn’t on the invoice, but it was only a couple of months old so maybe not replaced? I’ll give Alex a ring tomorrow and find out what was adjusted, and what wasn’t. He can have another look and check stuff, coz it definitely isn’t the smooth beautiful beast that got me to Lutterworth a couple of weeks ago ☹️
