If you fairly happy it's not the pipe at the filler cap that's split, then you need to investigate further. It could be: The longer filler pipes, #6 and #7 in the parts diagram One of the little rubber joints on the breather system, there are two on the top of the tank, one in each rear quarter, above the rear lights. Tank to carburettor fuel pipes. Is your filler neck rubber definitely same as the one Pkrboo linked to on the samba? If so, it will be a straight swap for the one Jules65 linked. I've just looked at the Heritage catalogue, the diagram linked on here, you need to refer to the lower breakdown (the tank at the bottom) the top one is for early bays where the filler neck was further forward than late bays.
Thanks @MorkC68 I think it looks the same filler as pkrboo tho not entirely sure. We've changed one little bit of hose that was from the breather pipe by the battery in the rear light bit. Does the fire wall need removing to access tank to carb pipes. I think so. I've been under the van and in the engine bay and all looks ok. Tho I didn't have the engine running as I'm a scaredy. I shall do so with engine running.
You should have to remove the firewall for the fuel hoses as they run underneath but you will have to remove them to do the fuel tank breathers.. You've done one breather under the r/h - check! There is a similar one on the left, worth doing for peace of mind. Maybe the filler neck is a job for Techenders
you may know, where is the fuel return on a fi system. is it at the top of the tank and could it of been uncapped when it went to carbs instead or is it returned to tank underneath.
We have had a strong smell of petrol in ours several times and the first time it was due to a worn hose on the breather system........the red one in this diagram The last time it was the rubber elbow at the filler neck. To change it I had to remove the filler pipe and found that the bottom section of rubber had nigh on split so it was a bonus I changed it when I did. This photo (not mine) shows how the filler pipe looks, but to get to it in reality is a pain through the hole in the engine bay and removing the firewall helps greatly ,but to get the firewall out means removing the engine. It does however allow ALL breather pipe connectors to be changed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Fuel return on fuel injection is next to the feed pipe in the bottom of the tank. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
You do not have a breather in the filler pipe. It is as per the pic jules65 put up The fuller pipe is removable with engine in and also firewall can come out with engine still in with a small battle. Check he breather pipe behind the spare wheel well. Also check the filler cap is nicely sealed. Might also be the filler pipe where it attaches to the tank Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Cheers @pkrboo What is the little round hole in my first photo for then? It looks purpose made? I've got friends son for the weekend so won't be able to get up to check my van now . I may take him to Donny vw show tomorrow tho, best go in the T4 just in case

think the little round hole is its own built in breather, it doesnt connect to anything and should be there.
Yep it is! As said before, best guess for smell when filling tank to capacity is hose 6 on Jules's diagram. Ours had become leaky around the tank connection. As I had to take the firewall out to replace it, I did the breathers anyway.
But as I'm a scroogey and am feared of over filling I only do half full. I did go up and down winnats pass so maybe the incline threw the petrol out @pkrboo did you say that in an 'I already flipping told you that' manner?
no it was a genuine confirmation that's all!! gonna need some pics of underneath where the tank is and the fuel lines to see what fuel pressure reg and fuel pump you now have is.
Did you ever figure out the petrol smell issue? I've got the same problem (slight smell of fumes) and am trying to track down the cause. Fuel filler neck is the same as yours - the bird beak - which appears to be split/cracked on the inside, but okay on the outside. The clamped connection to the metal pipe (#7 in the diagram) appears to be fine. Is the split on the inside of the rubber elbow enough to cause the smell? I've also checked the other connections on the diagram. Everything looks okay, but the red one (#24) could probably do with replacing too (see pic). Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated. Oh yeah, it's a 1979 USA Federal (not California) Bus. Cheers!
