  1. Still with a VW gearbox? The wiring is just a switch and with a VW engine is powered from the black wore connected to the coil. So you need to find that and put 12volts on it put it in reverse and it should work, or your switch is knackered

Well had a good day on my crewie.

Spent hours trying to sort out the cats knitting purporting to be a wiring harness.

New parts limited to some rear light units and some fuses.

It's now much tidier and I think correctly routed.

So far I've got indicators, hazards and a horn.

    The starter motor also works.

    No lights or wipers yet.

I did discover the fuel tank is partially full of diesel !

This confirms my suspicion its previously (and recently) had a water cooled engine fitted.

The clues were what must have been coolant pipes under the bus running rear to front and some rather bulky bracketry welded to the rear bumper hangers. The air box mount has also been removed. Need to find one of these.

This is all stripped out now.

  3. yes my VW gearbox is still in there.

so the 12v could come from anywhere? I assume it previously came off the coil so only live when engine running?

The reverse light comes from the gearbox switch same as it did with your old engine. At least I'm sure mine did.
Now I've got a scooby box it definitely does.

Coil + to switch on side of gearbox with an inline fuse ,other side of switch to reverse light,

  7. Rang this morning for an update , having had a conversation yesterday about a few things , and it won't be ready until Monday ☹️☹️. Having said that it's in good hands and the list of problems is being dealt with, all caused by PO !!

  8. Yesterday I was fixing a few stuff on the van to get it ready for its MOT today, when one of my neighbor of a certain age stopped by and told me:
"Nice van but it's lacking a very important thing!"
I look at him quite puzzled and ask what this is. To which he replies:
"I'll be back in a couple of minute with it."

A few minutes later he come back with a big grim on his face and hand me a sticker of the logo for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Apparently it's an original one from the 60s that he got when he was younger. And back then 90% of the VW had one of those.
We keep on chatting and he tells me he owned two campers, a few bugs back in the days. He also spent a year living in his van on a Greek beach.
He also gave me some old headlamp converters for continental touring.
All and on a very nice person!

And today, MOT without any advisory! Happy day!

Yesterday I replaced the front gear linkage bush, refmoved the fridge, cleaned up the gas pipes and ignitor to the fridge and refitted the fridge. Fitted an inline fan to the main heater pipe that has been sat in my garage for 13yrs. Recharged the leisure battery and now I am all set up at Dub Odyssey with beer in hand. Just got a quotation for the chassis rot, outriggers and sills.
As I dont have space to DIY its £3000 labour plus parts. They will be C&C or Schofields as its already very expensive.
I will have it done as having it fixed makes it worth real money and leaving it makes it a project for somebody else and worth little to me.

Just as well I had money put aside for a new car sometime.. its going to the bus.

Went for a nice easy job today.

    Fit a fuel filler cap.

    And it didn't fit

As well as the fuel tank being full of diesel, it seems as though a non VW filler has been bodged into the hole as well.

Decision made then - fuel tank out for a clean and flush.

I have ordered some parts from JK and hope to eventually reinstate the correct late bay fuel filler cap.

Got a feeling this is going to be a mucky job.

To be fair flat pitches are a premium on this site. But the smell
of the public portaloo's is the least of the families worries. It's when (after copious amounts of Lager and kebabs) I use ours in the small space between the awning and van that the complaints start.

Sooooooo, tonight is a theme night and the theme is Super Hero's and Villans.

One chap stood out and during the conversation where my 15yr old daughter said he had balls to wear what he did (I did titter somewhat) he explained his wife had decided not to come last minute. I can't think why

He had a cracking sense of humour and gave us all a good chuckle
