Hi I just wanted to ask about steering box play, I've stripped mine from the van as the steering coupler has loads movement with out moving the arm. I've just bought a rebuild a kit from Keith and I've read the guide, how much play will the adjustment remove and how can you tell if the box is worn too much? Thanks
Depends how much slop you've got . Worth stripping your box down and seeing how much wear there is (although hard to judge unless it's very obvious).
It was about 2" at the steering wheel, my rubber coupler has gone but the play was visible by hand when I was moving the coupler from underneath. Does the oil change help much too?
Only way to find out is to do a trial adjustment. Oil change won't do much, apart from put oil in there if there wasn't any before Someone on here did a good box stripdown thread - can't recall who.
I did quite a thorough job of mine, it's in my resto thread but I don't have time to sift through to find it right now.
Ok so I struck lucky and found it straight away! Page 11 of my resto if someone can do a linky thing.
The seals only stop leaks. Problem is on the late bay box is the bronze bushing in the cover is cast into the aluminium. But there's enough meat in there to mill out a space for a new bushing and press one in. I did that with a Dremel and a lot of luck using the shaft and the adjuster screw as a reference to work out where to grind and keep it central and circular.
Looking at mine there is no grinding noise it's just play, I'll try and get a video later to show it. If the bronze bush has worn what symptoms does that show?
I suppose so, but easier on. Make sure the box is centred, then moved off centre by the right amount before adjusting.
No- not without the correct equip, but there are shims under one cover If its knackered i have one you could try
