glueing engine back together..

  1. hopefully at the weekend I may get around to bolting my type 1 engine case back together, done all the prep work setting cam clearances, distributor drive and checked and built up the crank ready.
I have only seen cases built of type4 motors on here and wondered about the case sealer, is it done the same as the type4 case with sealant like this around the main (6) case bolts

sorry borrowed photo from another thread, I hope you don't mind if you read this....
or do you miss it out from there as you have 6 o seals that go down over the studs and just brush a coating of seal around the outer edge of the case..
@snotty what did you do on your build, it was a type 1 engine wasn't it.........

  2. I didn't put mine together, although I was intimately familiar with the innards ;).

Looks about right. I wouldn't go over the top with sealant: just enough to seal. Don't forget your cam plug!

  3. Very good point about the cam plug area. I replaced the flywheel oil seal twice, only to find it is actually weeping from the cam plug.

If the case is clean and undamaged on the faces where it touches it almost does not need sealant. So a very thin smear of sealant is enough.

  5. The case is good, no damage..
more of the question was should I put the sealant around the 6 main studs as its a type 1 1600 and have the rubber seals that go down into the case. I am using curil t sealant also.. cheers

  6. Isn't K2 the stuff for case halves ?

  7. Curil T's fine. You can put a thin smear on.

  8. This was mine just before assembly, 1956cc been together 7 years now.

  9. Cheers for the pic
I take it you don't have any leaks. ..
looks like plenty of lube on the build up. .

  10. That looks pretty good. @wendygun Maybe I'd keep sealant away from the main bearing webs: too much and they'll "egg out". Laurie Pettit used to rant about folk slopping silicone on them, opening up the webs.

  11. No, no leaks apart from a slight one around the oil pump but that developed after crankcase breather hoses kinked up in France at Classic Le Mans (it was hot). Personally I don't think its natural for an AC VW to have 100% zero oil leaks!
