Fitting a recon engine 1600tp

  1. I shall have a look for for leaks, check bits, tomorrow then. Although having spent god knows how long squatting in front of the bloody thing staring at at it in despair, anger, wonderment and examing every bloody part of it in case I've missed something that's stopping it running, and not seeing any oily unpleasantness im going to keep my fingers crossed for an easy fix.
Maybe even pray tonight. Or bang my head against a wall some more

  2. Stick at it mate - it`s all a learning curve , you`ve got it running which is the main thing - well done ...

    :hattip:

  3. Do a turd in it, it might thicken the oil so it does not leak, at worst it will make the oil darker so you can see where its coming from. Don't know how you will get your bum in there but hey ho lol

  4. As said, oil pump cover is suspect number 1 - the covers are often banana shaped, so if it's there then easy fix.

Looks like it might be the case joint though, more of a problem.

Either way, I won't take it as it is, plus don't do anything until you speak to them otherwise they will claim invalidated warranty!

Bit of a bummer now it runs. Good luck sorting.

  5. Keep going, mate. If it's started, you're most of the way there. Take the tinware off, wipe the leak then see where it drips from. As above, oil pump cover is a possibility and is fixable. The good news is that it's not leaking from the flywheel end ;)...

  6. wipe it off and sell it

  7. Had a look at the oil pump cover, and it does look like there's some seepage from that area although I don't think that could account for the amount that's dripping off the case.
As expected with my luck though, the bloody thing wouldn't idle today so I couldn't look underneath to watch while it's running.
I managed to get a spanner on the pump cover nuts, they all seemed nice and tight , not able to tighten them further.

Seepage through your oil pump nuts. You can get nuts with builtin seals, otherwise degrease and coat threads with sealer.

  9. You know if it's possible to get the pump cover off in situ, looks very tight /awkward?
Or I need to remove bottom pulley and piece of tin?

  10. Ring them first mate before you start taking it apart, if they say to do it then do so, They might say you have caused issues !!

  11. Yeah going to call him soon as I get rid of the kids,

Could it be something I've done?

  12. Highly doubtful, you don't want to start taking things off though and breaking seals until they say so though.

  13. if you have only reinstalled the ancillaries and tinware I'd have thought unlucky. Where'd the engine come from?

    UNLIKELY not unlucky

  14. TES , the engine shop up in Erith.

  15. Bloke said to check behind bottom pulley for blockages in the spiral bit of the pulley hub.
But his main point was get some miles on it to make sure everything is bedded in etc.
Having thought about that though, to get some miles on it I need an MOT. Surely the MOT man's not going to be happy with a vehicle that's *******ing out oil??

  16. Surely if it leaks it leaks and they won't suddenly stop ... usually they only get worse

  17. Wipe it down and see if its coming out the case - some bits may 'bed down' (possibly, probably not) but the case seal won't. Danger of running it is that it dumps lots of oil, engine gets hot, and the warranty is void due to overheating. Personally I think he is trying it on.

Each MOT man is different, but the worst I have had was an advisory ("Engine leaking oil") on a T25 which had a major leak - I was topping up the oil daily.

  18. Did they not check for blockages on the spiral bit before fitting the pulley ? Sound a bit odd !!

  19. I fitted the pulley, the spirals were definitely clean, I've now checked behind pulley as best I can without any dismantling , I'm confident it's not leaking there.
    That would be my opinion.
Just to add , he said get some miles on it etc, but also to get straight back to him if there's no improvement, so it wasn't as if he told me jog on
My concern is at my rate of work, by the time I've got it running ok, motd, got some miles on it, the warranty will almlost be over....
And apart from that , ive got an inlet manifold leak, fuel being spat out the rear of the manifold horizontal tube, (at least that's what it looks like) which would explain why I've been able to get it running, then go back the next day and it won't run. So that needs addressing .

I spotted drops of fuel at bottom of fan housing, you can see a vertical white mark(fuel had stripped paint) that seems to be where the fuel is being spat from manifold onto fsnhousing, then it's run down and is being blown along the bottom of fsnhousing (horizontal/sloped white mark,)

  20. Did you bung up all the unused holes on the inlet manifold?
