No need to change the gearbox, that link @3901mick put up would be ideal, you'd recoup plenty selling your existing bits
He didn't mean sell your bus. Sell your engine complete and buy a type 4 engine like he linked to. Quids in.
You don't have to change your box but they're not the same. The gearing is different so keeping the 3 rib would be a compromise.
^^^ this, Type 1 engines seem to start eating themselves over 60 / 65. Type 4 are much stronger, 1700, 1800 or 2 litre. You wont break the land speed record but much stronger.
3901mick, apologies!! Pay me to clink on the link first next time - thanks!!! Hired a camper last year for a couple of days road trip, as mine was in my garage without wheels (!) and the guy swore by 2l T4 engines - wouldn't hire out a T1 he said and his were excellent condition Cal imports . So assuming I'm happy sat at 60mph and all else being equal, including cost, you still feel T4 is my best bet???
Sorry for asking again but to be 100% clear, if I look into the T4 option, I wont need to replace the gearbox re my standard 1979 1584cc and other auxiliary items? Appreciate there will be some 'tweaking' but nothing major - correct?
If you change to type 4 the gearbox will work but revs will be slightly higher in 4th, If you buy a turnkey like the link, its pretty much all there to pop in, other than minor wiring and your air filter stand. Pretty much nothing on the 1600 will be any use, you can sell your turnkey as it is, if complete possibly £6 -700 would be my guess but dont quote me on it
Excellent 3901mick, really helpful....difficult decision as a lot of conflicting stuff out there and the more you look the more confused and conflicting the info!!! Not looking to break any land speed records just to get up those long long hills!
A 2 ltr type 4 engine with a 3 rib box is a poor combination . Higher revs in 4th, the constant feel of wanting a 5th gear . Get a 6 rib and spread your wings at a price of 6 to 800 quid I found the difference massive ....and that price is second hand and unknown .
Thanks Faust. I need to get my head around the benefit of a reconditioned stock 1584cc (potential upgrade to 1776cc) and the change / trade in to a 2lt T4 with upgraded gearbox etc etc and whether the additional cost gives me any benefit - again I'm happy cruising at 60mph!
60 mph in 4th with the same box you've already got is the same whatever engines driving it!! Put bigger wheels and tyres on with the bigger engine. I've run thousands of miles with 2.0 and 3rib box , there's people on here with Subaru motors and 3 rib boxes.
To do hill climbs you'll need something very beefy indeed. I'd ditch the A/C motor in favour of a mid engined V8 of some sort mabey, a Chevy small block. You'll also need to get the bus lengthened otherwise it'll tip over on very steep climbs. Of course, I don't have to tell you about hi-grip knobbly tyres, you're probably well versed on that subject already being interested in hill climbing in the first place.
Yes - that's what I do and I'm happy with it. Maybe one day extend the 4th gear but until then all is fine
