Not starting woes

  1. Hi all, I need some help guys, my van has been running so lovely for the past 7 months since I have had an electronic ignition and alternator fitted, new starter motor, new fuel tank as some dummy rammed an prototype bay one in there, new filters and breathers all round.....anyway with 1000 trouble free miles of motoring and starting first time every time, it's decided to not start, the battery is strong (12.8v), it turns over fine, yes there is more than half a tank of fuel in it, but just won't fire or sounds like it'll want to fire. What I have noticed is that the engine pitch had seemed to change over the last week where it sounds a little rattly, but the oil levels are all good and not loss of performance.

Without calling my mechanic out as i'm not the best in the engine bay, can you guys kindly point me in the right direction of what to check first?

Have a cup of tea and try again in case it flooded. :)

Rattly isn't good. Are using Morrison's 30? It's a bit rubbish particularly in the hot weather.

Ketbag? Ketamine rots your bladder. It doesn't get better. No charge for the health advice. :)

  3. Yeah, thought it could be flooded so did the throttle slammed to the floor method and tried 24 hours later and still not firing. Morrison's 30? lost on that one mate.

I have no idea what's happening and what to do next. Did wonder if someone tampered with it, but it's in the back garden, :-/

Ketbag, just a school nickname because of my surname, before ketamin was around I might add, haha.

  4. I think zeds phone has auto corrected his typing
    Morris mono grade 30w oil
If it's turning over fine and your getting fuel through then I'd be checking to see if your getting a spark

Flooding through a dodgy fuel metering needle valve in the carb or a temperature related failure of the ignition module may be an issue.
See if you get a spark when you turn it over ...

  7. Morrisons, hahaha. No, i've got Halfords 20w50 in it.

I'll check for the spark, being stupid, taking the lead slightly off the plug whilst someone is turning it over?

    Cheers guys

  8. put another good spark plug on the lead ,and touch the tinware or earth and get someone to turn it over...

hold with insulated pliers unless you like shocks..(like me)

  9. So I was going to test the spark tonight but thought i'd try and turn it over again and managed to start it, had to pump the pedal a bit though. Turned it off after warming up, then tried it again and yet again had problems starting it....pumping the pedal. Any suggestions. It idles fine, no hunting, choke off. Blockage in carb perhaps? Still sounds a bit weird too like there's a hole in the exhaust but can't see anything.

  10. Is the choke working? I had one that kept getting stuck...

  11. The winner's choice of oil - comes in a nice tin too.

  12. I believe so, mainly because starting it again from warm 30 seconds after turning it off it was a pain to start again :/

  13. You sure the sound isn't sucking noise rather than blowing ? Check a pipe hasn't dropped off somewhere

  14. It's definitely blowing. So i've done a spark test and getting nothing!! I've got a spare coil so gonna whip that on tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. I am wondering if the 7 month old petronix points have died.....any thoughts?

  15. First thing to check to be honest ...

    :hattip:

  16. Cheers Lasty.....how do I check it though, whip some old points in there, if I can find them?

  17. I had something similar happen to the Petronix module in my Beetle, one of the wires was rubbing on the inside and started shorting of the body of the distributer.

  18. New coil and checked for chaffing on the cables in the dizzy.....still nothing, i'm guessing it has to be the petronix has gone down the tube, so much for investing in a more expensive one :(

  19. have you 12v going to the coil.?

  20. Yeah, getting consistent 11.83v from the positive side and 12.07 from the battery. De-pleated a little from trying to turn it over.
