New engine
« on: Mon 10/05/10, 18:44 »
Before I start it is my hope to keep my van for good.
My 2L auto engine is Ok just loosing a bit of oil, slightest of rumbles in the bottom end, new top end but OK at the moment. I was looking at the heritage site and noticed that they have just a few of those NOS industrial engines left at a whopping £2350!!!should i push the boat out, buy one and stick it in the garage(Just swap over the bits, tin ect and bang it in when the time comes) Or wait for it to pass away, (might be years) and get a recon for around a grand less?? Basically would a NOS vw be worth 1K more than a recon?
One thing I wondered was would I have an end float problem taking off the flywheel and replacing it with a flex plate, and would a numbty like me be able to set it?? :conf

What you should have done was buy one they had a few years ago. Very similar, hardly used and about £750. They were the bargains. Wish I had £2,350 to spend on something I didn't need and wouldn't use!

When you did top end, did you do big end bearings? If not, you're living on borrowed time so maybe get the engine and you'll need it sooner rather than later. I used to advise people that wanted top end to do the big ends as well as your increased power will knock the bottom end out pronto. :dead Now I insist. If they won't have it done I won't do the top end. You can do it through the barrel holes without splitting the case.

Zed. That's crazy!! For the cost of having the big ends done while your doing the other bits done is a no brainer. I'm like you, if you have it in pieces you might as well get it all done. Flat 4 engines have almighty stresses on them due to the design.

As for the Heritage engine, as Horts said.
