73 westy

words by jonnyk

Ok well here goes.....

We bought Bertha a 1973 Westfalia at Vanfest 2004, having gone there for a look around!  We had a bay Westy in 2000 which we brought as a project and had to tow it home, the van needed much more work than we first thought so we sold it for £300 (a tax exempt westy with interior!!).

When we got Bertha she was alpine white and Sumatra green (a colour that neither Al or I were fond of, but could live with until we could afford to have her painted).  She was a  totally standard 1600 complete with the original rear hatch fly screen and cab bunk.

We got bitten by the bug pretty quickly and went camping as much as possible, travelling to pretty much every show we could in 2005.  We have fond memories of the "All Types" show that year in North Wales where our then 3 year old daughter Grace decided to draw the outline of a cat and dog on the outside of the sliding door with a stone!! (We were so proud!!)

We had a good fortnights holiday in Cornwall in her in 2006, all four of us (Samuel being only 9 weeks old) camping.

Fistral Beach.

We tried a couple of different sets of wheels, a set of Design 90's

then at Vanfest 2006 we bought some Empi 5 spokes

It was apparent that she needed a little TLC over the winter 2006/2007 so we decided to take her off the road and have some welding done.  She had screaped through the previous two MOT's on jacking points.

We removed the interior and all was not well

The simple amounts of welding that we thought were required escalated into a full strip down and rebuild, including a pair of cab doors, Australian sliding door, engine lid, wheel arches, rear corners, cargo floor, outriggers , jacking points, the list goes on...heres a few of the restoration photos

The beam was shot so it was replaced with a Type 2 detectives one fitted with adjusters

And slowly it started to go back together...

She returned to the road in August 2009 and we fitted new flooring and rescued the interior from our garage and got it all refitted in a day

then went on holiday the next!

She was at this point fitted with the Empi 5's and sitting at standard ride height, we decided to make a few changes and got rid of the Empi 5's and returned to steels

We then dropped her one spline

and decided that the steels didn't suit the look!

We looked at just about every wheel available in 5 x 112 and eventually decided to get a set of Empi 5's again!!

Curtains were bought from vwcampercurtains, the front seats and door cards retrimmed by Bromsgrove Auto Trimmers.

We managed to locate a little Westy trailer for our camping gear, and have done three shows in comfort this year already!

She will be inthe TV show Wheeler Dealers next month as she was filmed as the "shiny" one on the programme and was put through her paces on the track

then filmed for what seemed to be an age

Nice.... can't beat a Westy! Amazing how all the 73's seem to rot in exactly the same places.

You can make a Westy Essen trailer sit level on a lowered bus undoing the swan-neck (and hitch, etc) turning it over and bolting it all back together.

I was parked up next to this Bay the night before Stanford Hall this year.  It's stunning.

I heard from a body guy at my welding class that there was a steel shortage around 1973 which meant vehicles were being made from sub-standard quality materials around then. Hence the tendancy to rust. Not sure how true that is.

Nice bus jonny. Great to have a show restore a late bay rather than another flippin' splitty.

Alfa Romeo and Lancia never had that problem with the Alfasud and Beta. They were just used bad steel from start to finsh. Citroen went through a bad phase between 75 and 76.
