engine still leaking oil?!?!
« on: Sat 13/03/10, 09:55 »
right, im a bit hacked off now :s
i have had the engine out to replace the flywheel oil seal as i was having a bit of an oil leak problem.  engine came out, flywheel and clutch off, and all looks good, no oil contamination anywhere which is unusual if these seals go.  there was however a little pool of oil sitting in the bottom of the gearbox but it was not sprayed all over the place. cleaned it all up anyway, replaced the main flywheel oil seal with a new silicone version, and yes it is in the right way round and sitting very squarely, and also the flywheel o ring.  put it all back together again and popped the engine back in. drove it round the block and i have the same leak :s it is dripping down from where the engine and gearbox meet, right at the bottom centre, but of course this oil could be coming from anywhere. it is not the gearbox oil as when it was leaking before it was running down the engine oil level. it only leaks when it is running so i have layed under it with it running and wipe it clean and it then reappears soon after in the same place, and i am now officially confused.  anyone out there with some ideas please :um:
i hate welding!

Could it be leaking from the where the case splits, above or below the rear main (flywheel) seal? Failing that, oil cooler leak, getting blown out through the fan housing by the fan, over the bellhousing area?

You could try putting a load of talc around the area, and see if it will show up the area that is leaking, but that means taking it all off again, to put it back together, to then take it off again!

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Mark

if its not a big leak then leave it bud, hey most bays leave a puddle when parked anyway ;)

Crank seals are very hit and miss ,when you drop the engine you should investigate where it comes from ,if the oil smells of bad eggs then it`s gearbox...

Btw I always sit the oilseal about 2mil in...
