Don't know how competitive the prices are but i've used these before.

Now i just get it from my local steel merchant and save on the postage.

I use 1mm for bodywork (or a bit thicker if theres non in stock) and 2 or 3mm for chassis work.

Have a search through Yell.com for Steelstockholders in your area as these will have a variety in stock.

We have used 1.2mm mild steel sheet and this seems to work well and welds & forms successfully.

There are bits on the vans which have 1.6mm and 2mm thicknesses, just get offcuts.

Make sure you get Mild Steel and not DP (Dual Phase), TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity), HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy) or Galvanised as you will have trouble forming them or welding them as they are designed for production using presses and forming machines. We test them for Arcelor Mittal Steel and know of these problems from personal experience

metal mania ebay shop is really good for steel, but as the others said, you won't get cheaper than your local engineers, even a whole sheet costs pounds!

Be careful with galvanised lost, it is an absolute bitch to get a good weld to penetrate (unless you get a flapwheel sander on the areas where you want to weld).

forget galv, it will take out the metal around it! (google galvanic corrosion!) and its a poo to weld!
zintec sheet is preferrable, as it will weld beautifully with a MIG and the dissimilar metal problem is reduced if you spray all surrounding (the whole shell ideally) metal with a zinc rich primer. other than that it has pretty much the same weathering properties as galv.
as above, 1mm or 1.2mm (20swg/18swg) is about right for most vw bodywork, 1.6mm or 2mm (16swg/14swg) for chassis.

I welded two big sheets of galvanised in my pickup some five years ago
