i used to fit trackers when i worked in a mercedes dealer. the system is meant to be a stealth install, no stickers etc and you dont tell anyone you got it fitted. they are a stolen vehicle retrieval system only and in no way immobilise or prevent theft. they should be used with a seperate alarm / immobiliser system. the gps system on the horizon model does need to see the sky, but it also has the radio system as a back up. the radio system does work in shipping containers etc. Trackers, last time i intalled one anyway, DO NOT work outside of the UK. so if you leave your bus in a compound or lock up, do not get a retrieve system that you have to physically phone and report the loss, get a monitor system that alerts you, or it may be out of the country before you notice its gone!

Any updates on security - or deals with tracking companies..

As i'm slowly getting bits sorted on my camper i think i should invest in something. If nothing is on the horizon i'll just go for a Tracker system.

Has anyone considered using Smartwater, selectadna or redweb to cover the camper in identifiable marks if it gets chopped up and parts sold (not that I really want to think about people doing that to anyones pride and joy !)

i thought about datatag like i had on my bike but as i can't see the police being arsed to go around shows looking for beeps on their machines or a light to see if it has smart water on a part on a auto jumble stall i feel it would be pointless.

maybe if the authorities took more of an interest in recovering stuff people would think twice about nicking it?

'approach your local police man, i would but i can't run at 50mph! to catch them'

I know!  why dont the mods, as a collective voice of the forum and bus owners worldwide, approach the manufacturers of the famous DISKLOK, you know the BIG YELLOW steering wheel cover. Got one for my Landrover since the first one was knicked! cost about £90 for  that. Would be a GOOD market for it, But would be a SPECIAL due to the dia of the wheel, ALMOST unpenetrable!  Stumpy ps I'd buy one!

hiya!

just wanted to add my two penneth for what it's worth.
clubbing in to get a deal is a great idea but if it can't be sorted out QUICKLY please don't wait too long.

having just had ours nicked I've spent the last week on loads of forums trying to trace him, and it's DEPRESSING how often buses / vans / pride and joys are being stolen and (form personal experience) how ar*ed the police aren't.

We don't know yet if we'll get another one... can't stand the thought of going through this again, but if we did the FIRST thing we would sort out whatever else needed doing, is security. visible to act as a deterrent AND an unmarked tracker.

these "people" know what they're doing but one o fthe worst parts of what we're going through now is kicking ourselves because we didn't do EVERYthing possible to stop Henry being nicked!

this is exactly how i feel about my Landrover. You think vw bus theft is bad! you should see how many LR 90 and 110's get pinched, its truly worrying. My first truck was stolen, as I had no device at all, took me a while to find another good one, this one has imobiliser (not the std LR one as this can be disarmed in about 3 minutes) and a disklok, If this one goes I WONT get another, Likewise, although I not yet worried about the bus, If It went I wouldn't get another. maybe a type 25 weisel but NOT another bay. TOO much to buy and just not worth the bread man.

have just watched my neighbours 07 plate merc thing (bleddy big thing that looks like a range rover) being dragged with handbrake still on, up onto a low loader  to be taken by the bailiffs  :shocked
She eventually came out to give them the keys but it has got me thinking how easy to steal a van this way.
Anyone looking would think it was legit, unless they looked at the wheels and noticed they were just sliding along the floor rather than actually turning!
Her alarm eventually went off because the car was rocking. But if you had no alarm, there would be no indication that it is actually a theft taking place  :shocked

Ok, so would those wheel/tyre locks make any difference?   stop the van being dragged? make it really obvious it was being nicked? What do you think?
road trippin' with my 2 favourite allies,
fully loaded we got snacks and supplies...

and a busted engine - the gnomes did it - grrr vermin

I have just had a new alarm system fitted, for obvious reasons I'm not going to post the manafacturer or all the details but it when activated it calls my mobile  :cool

I would also be interested in the group buy for the tracker system for my other Van too.

I did offer to arrange a group buy on a security system but there was only one taker! I even advertised on another forum and guess what: no takers.

Post up in here any security devices that you have found that might keep our bus a little safer.

(do not post up here any 'little tricks' you use as scum might look here too)

Something my dad always used to do - create a break somewhere in the ignition cable (away from the dash) and conceal a switch somewhere in the cab (not obvious). Then, unless someone can get in the engine bay the vans difficult to start. Modern immobilisers are good as well, but its difficult to conceal in the cab due to the open underneath to the dash. I looked recently at lifting a deadbolt system out of a golf to modify but its not so easy

I almost had my van stolen once the only thing that really held them up was working out how to get in without smashing window as all door handles are removed and access to engine bay is all hidden gave me time to get down stairs and get pic axe handle and pop out and ask if they need any help they moved pretty quick turned out number plate on lo loader was a false plate so as far as know police never caught up with them and never did see again but now has wheel clamp ,alarm and cover if that dont stop them nothing will i also take steering wheel of if not using for awhile

I read an interesting article in an old Practical Performance Car magazine this week. They used an old Nokia phone and a pay-as-you-go sim and made their own tracking device. Then signed up to a phone tracking company on the WWW called followus.co.uk and gave it a go.

First they put the phone onto silent and wired in the phone via the changer direct to the live circuit and then hid the phone. And being a mobile phone it will still be opertating if the car battery is disconnected.

They were a little disappointed by the results. They reconstructed a theft and placed it in the country side. The tracker device according to the website said it was 6 miles from where it actually was. When they took it to the city it was found with ease. It's all to do with the number of masts in the areas and in the country there are fewer. FYI apparently it can track within 50 meters in suburban areas and 550 meters in the country. As PPC found out, it doesn't exactly run true.

But at the end of the day they have a tracking device in their vehicle and all for £16.99. It has to be worth a try.
